MojoMotors.com has a couple of requirements for the types of vehicles dealerships post on our website. Each vehicle must be used and can’t be any older than a 2000 model year, but no newer than a 2012. Last week, a Mojo partner dealer Bonneville & Son in Manchester, New Hampshire listed a four-door 2009 Jeep Wrangler X. Nothing seemingly unusual, but wait, what’s that RHD in the title? Right hand drive. Yep, that’s a Jeep Wrangler X with right hand drive. Curiosity prevailed and I started digging to find out more.

Before making a call to Bonneville & Son, the Mojo offices figured this car was imported from somewhere in the Caribbean. Following a brief call with a friendly sales person at the dealership, I learned a postal worker traded-in this Wrangler. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find out what vehicle they bought to replace the RHD Jeep, but I figure they wanted something a little rarer like a RHD Evoque or one of those motorcycles that has a silly looking sidecar which is probably extremely conducive for mail delivery. Prospective buyers have checked out the Jeep but banks don’t like financing a RHD vehicle. The salesman didn’t seem to care much. He has enjoyed logging 6 hours behind the wheel of the Jeep and hundreds of awkward glances and waves.

This leads me to my next question, how come the USPS is using Grumman LLV mail trucks instead of RHD Jeep Wranglers? Wouldn’t the coolness factor of a Wrangler help save the dying Postal Service? Yes, of course it would, but it’s not that simple. There are technically three kinds of mail carriers: city carriers, rural carriers and highway carriers. For the purposes of this post, ignore the role of highway carriers. City carriers drive those ice cream truck looking things and deal with regulations and dorky striped shorts. Since New Hampshire is largely rural, there are lots of rural carriers servicing the state. Think of rural carriers as the mercenaries in the world of parcel delivery, hired by the USPS. Here’s everything you need to know about rural letter carriers a la Wikipedia:

- Rural carriers must drive unmarked vehicles and carriers don’t have uniforms

- The National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association is the labor union representing rural mail carriers

- The NRLCA exists to “improve the methods used by rural letter carriers” and ultimately “promote a fraternal spirit among its members”

- Rural letter carriers can earn anywhere from $34,000 to $68,000

- The USPS is outsourcing mail delivery to rural letter carriers because they’re cheaper than city letter carriers

Are you into postal carriers or Jeep Wranglers of the right hand drive variety with four doors? Then check it out on our website and then compare to the other Wranglers more suited for driving along American roadways. You can also check out US Drive Right, a website selling right hand drive vehicles for postal workers.

In the world of the interwebs there exists a brand. The name of this brand is MojoMotors.com and the goal is help shoppers buy used cars. They take this very seriously. So seriously, in fact, they have not only signed up over 25,000 shoppers for their website, but closed $3 million in funding. The funding will allow the web-based startup to expand and help even more used car shoppers find discounts at local dealers and receive alerts when prices drop on the cars they like.

Mojo Motors Fuels Up for Expansion with $3 Million in Funding for Used Car Buying Platform

NEW YORK, NY – May 8, 2012 – MojoMotors.com, the leading used car deals platform, today announced that it has closed a $3 million funding round with Atlas Venture and existing investors including RPM Ventures, NextView Ventures, and others. Ryan Moore of Atlas Ventures will join the company’s board of directors. Mojo Motors will use the funds to expand outside its beta market of Boston, scale marketing efforts, and continue to develop the Mojo platform.

“Mojo Motors brings real innovation to the used car marketplace,” said Atlas Venture partner Ryan Moore. “With nearly 40 million used cars sold per year, it’s a huge market ripe for disruption.”

Launched in 2011 by eBay Motors and Ford Motor Company veteran Paul Nadjarian, MojoMotors.com is the first website to bring customized price alerts and exclusive member discounts to used car shoppers. Mojo Motors has completed a successful beta in the greater Boston area, and plans to expand into more major markets during 2012.

“Mojo does the hard work, finding great deals on used cars while providing extra savings to members,” said Mojo Motors CEO Paul Nadjarian. “Just join, surf the cars that you like, and we’ll start sending you deals as they happen.”

Google Analytics is a treasure trove of great information for brands. It is also chock full of borderline useless information. Not as useless as knowing a hubcap was stolen from three separate cars in Methuen, Massachusetts, but close. Actually, depending on your love of interesting factoids, Google Analytics is an excellent source of data. It’s a way to feel the pulse of your user base, where visitors are coming from and what kind of software they’re using. It’s like Facebook creepery for nerds. Keep reading to see what we found.

- Even though we don’t do business outside the United States, we’re big in Canada. Why? We’re not really sure, but it might have something to do with out refusal to call Canada America’s hat.

- In the past month MojoMotors.com has had eight unique visitors from China. Our hacking skills got past their censors. +1 for democracy.

- 35% of our visitors our using Internet Explorer, 20% use Safari, 17% use Google Chrome and 16% use Firefox. Surprisingly, there was somebody browsing the web using Netscape which hasn’t been updated since 2008 and a car shopper using their PS3. It is apparent the tech skills of our visitors are expansive.

- We prefer our users to shop with Firefox especially since it’s nearly a second faster when loading our website than Google Chrome and half a second faster than Internet Explorer. This data, mind you, is coming from Google Analytics.

- A startling statistic found in the virtual droves of Google Analytics is 7% of visitors are using IE7 which was released in 2006. Almost 1% of our users browse with IE6. This is not a joke. IE6 was released in 2001. That isn’t a joke either.

- The most popular car on MojoMotors.com in the past month is a 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX that has already been sold. Check her out.

Over the weekend you may have caught the NFL Draft on television. Think of it as a televised meat market with football teams all vying for the perfect cut to complete their menu. Unlike the NBA which drafts on a lottery system, the order of the NFL draft is based on a team’s performance from the last season. It’s simple, the better your team did, the later in the draft your team picks. That’s why the embarrassingly bad Colts got the top pick in the draft.

Money moves the NFL, but there’s a salary cap meaning teams can’t spend more than a certain amount of money on their players. This keeps the sport competitive and in a perfect world, every team in the hunt for a Super Bowl – it’s perfect competition (holler at the econ scholars). Obviously coaching dynamics and player chemistry all play a major role in team success, but the salary cap keeps uber-rich owners from going off on a spending spree. Otherwise, the Dallas Cowboys might become the next New York Yankees of football.

Aside from government regulations on safety or fuel efficiency, the automotive world is a free-for-all. Some companies have more money to produce beautiful, safe and luxurious cars. Is it fair that great and under appreciated companies like DeLorean Motor Company can go out of business because they can’t compete against the big boys like Toyota and GM? Without getting into an economic debate about the invisible hand and/or communism policies, let’s imagine something.

Let’s imagine there was a governing body over the automotive industry similar to the NFL. Auto companies would be like NFL teams and draftees would be the cars or trucks. Each year designers and engineers would craft new vehicles and then let the auto companies duke it out on a draft day. What will be the result? Companies that underperformed the year before have a chance to draft what are sure-to-be best sellers. More importantly, cars will be faster, more efficient and sexier. Bob Lutz wrote a book about how the pencil pushers in the auto business have killed the automobile. They focus on the facts, figures and stats instead of designing a car with soul.

The draft will save automobile design from mediocrity. Designers and engineers would have free reign over their vehicles. They could work without what Lutz calls “bean counters” hovering over their shoulders. This would leave the designers and engineers doing what they do best – building awesome cars. This would also leave the business folk to do what they do best – sell cars with awesome ads. Auto shows that travel the world could become auto drafts and a new spectator sport. Las Vegas would put odds on the vehicles they think each brand will draft.

They’re are some potential problems that are more complicated than originally anticipated. What happens to the automobile brands, the unions and the thousands of employees? There would still need to be some direction for the designers too, otherwise they’ll be cars like this driving around. Then again, if this was a perfect world, the Cadillac Sixteen would have been built and the WRC would be popular in America.
