A piece of creating a great place to work is the physical space you create for your team. Mojo has grown in the past couple of years and we had to upgrade our office space.
I’d like to share my thought process behind choosing and setting up our new office and why it’s all about the ENERGY.
This is the #1 criteria. You have be in the right spot to make it easy and convenient to have current and future employees get to the office. We are located a few blocks from Penn Station in NYC. This make it an easy commute for team members that live in New Jersey, Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. Our neighborhood is not the trendiest, but it’s the best spot for what we need. Convenience at the right price.
Great window exposure is a MUST HAVE. I won’t put my company in a space unless it has great windows. Natural light is like jet fuel for your mood and performance. In other words, it feeds ENERGY.
I don’t believe in offices for anyone. I sit with everyone else where all the thinking and working gets done. If you are hiring a new executive and he/she tells you they need an office, that is a huge red flag – don’t walk away, run away.
I don’t believe in cubes. Let’s face it, a cube is just a cheap office with lower walls and no door. The cube still cuts you off from your team mates and creates a separate between people and groups.
We have bench seating at Mojo where team members sit next to and across from each other. This type of seating drive a huge amount of collaboration and team work. It also allow us to fit more people in the same amount of space. Our office fits 30 people comfortably. The previous office could only fit 12 people with 3 offices and cubes. That a huge difference!
Conference rooms are not enough. You need conference rooms for meetings and private discussions, but you also need a few comfortable common areas where a small group can sit together and work on a project, talk, or just eat lunch. At Mojo we have two conference rooms and two common areas.
Too much noise is a drag on ENERGY. Employees that spend a lot of time on the phone will drive up the noise in your space. You can control some of the noise level with sound panels installed on the ceiling or walls. This will give you your space ENERGY without the downside of excessive noise.
Make the space your own. A few examples from the Mojo’s new office:
- Key areas painted with Mojo-orange accents
- Polished concrete floor for an industrial look
- Custom names for meeting areas: V10, V8, V6
- Company logo painted on the wall in our entrance
- A huge gong that we use to celebrate successes
Work hard. Play hard. We try to have at least 1 happy hour in the office each week to keep the office environment fun and give everyone a chance to socialize and get to know each other.
