5 cars to buy instead of a hybrid

Screen Shot 2013-07-17 at 1.09.29 PMOwning a hybrid means you’re saving money on gas and being green at the same time, right? You’re practically a model citizen! Not to the state department – they’re losing gas tax revenue. As of this month, Virginia and Michigan have implemented $100 annual fees for hybrid vehicles. North Carolina, Arizona and Oregon are reviewing similar proposals. Read more about it here.

So what do you do? Pay more for a hybrid than a gas-fueled car and then pay an annual fee? If you live in one of the affected states, you’ll probably want to sidestep this new hybrid tax. That’s why you should you consider some of these non-hybrid cars with great fuel economies.  [keep reading]

REVIEW: 2012 Jetta TDI SE

Last weekend, I made a trip back to college after spending all summer in NYC. I needed to swing back to rural Pennsylvania to pick up a few boxes I had left there in storage for the summer. Having no car, I decided to rent one for the weekend. I went for a Volkswagen Jetta TDI SE Automatic (MSRP $22,990) and, after driving over 500 miles, I can now give my short-term impressions on this car.

I have two main takeaways: firstly, the Jetta is all the car most people would ever need, and, secondly, diesel-powered cars rock. I am no experienced car reviewer, I haven’t driven hundreds of cars from Smart ForTwos to the latest Aventador. What I can offer, however, is an honest opinion on how this VW Jetta stacks up in real world use for the average Joe. You know, people like you and me who actually buy these cars. Read on for the rest of my thoughts.

Used cars to buy this summer

The Detroit News reported the price of gas is dropping (down 3.5% from a year ago) and that is causing the price of small cars to drop too. According to the article, the average price of gas is about $3.71 and if prices stay below $4.00, car shoppers will buy trucks, SUVs and minivans. Even though used car prices are at record highs because of inventory shortages, their prices will decline if gas prices do, in fact, remain stable.

Cool used car of the future: Dodge Hornet Concept

Dodge wants to replace the beleaguered Caliber. Wait, you don’t know what the Dodge Caliber is? That is precisely why Dodge wants to launch a brand new compact model. From the sounds of it, Dodge won’t call their new compact a Hornet (named after the Hudson Hornet), but with no other alternative, the Mojo Motors Blog will refer to Dodge’s new concept as the Hornet.

Hurricane Irene Radar Image

The only thing on television this weekend was Hurricane Irene coverage, at least on the East Coast, effectively blacking out or canceling the preseason football games I wanted to watch all week. This meant I could scour the web searching for noteworthy bits of information and links you might have missed.

-If you were too busy watching the MTV VMA’s (shame on you) instead of Top Gear, here’s what you missed. [link]

-August auto sales are expected to decline after Hurricane Irene damaged dealer inventories. [link]

-A Tumblr blog called Unsloppy Seconds features used cars and trucks for sale from around the web. [link]

-We spotted this Honda Civic parked in Brooklyn with a heavy-duty a steel lock attached to the trunk. [link]

-SAAB will be a no-show at this year’s Frankfurt Auto Show because they’re too broke. [link]

What’s in the trunk?

This Honda Civic modded with a steel lock must not have junk in that trunk.
