Hyundai is a South Korean multinational automaker based in Seoul that sells vehicles across the world in 193 countries. Hyundai has made a conscious effort to grow in the United States and has invested nearly $3 billion into the U.S. market. The Korean company has three locations in the United States including an engineering facility in Michigan, a manufacturing plant in Alabama and a design, research and proving ground in California. Hyundai builds the Elantra compact, Sonata midsize sedan and 2.4-liter four cylinder engine in the United States.
The company was launched in 1967 and is the fifth-largest automaker in the world due in part to its 32.8% stake in Kia Motors. Hyundai didn’t open up sales in the American market until 1986 with their compact Excel. Since their modest start in the U.S. market, Hyundai has continued to improve their design language and vehicle offerings.
