The Toyota Prius is midsize hatchback hybrid car built by the Toyota Motor Corporation sold in about 80 countries worldwide. The first hybrid Prius hit American pavement in 1997 and has been racking up sales in the States since. The Prius was originally a compact car, but by the second-generation (model years 2003-2009) it was reclassified as a midsize vehicle.
Used car shoppers on Mojo Motors Follow the third-generation Prii (plural of Prius) more than any other hybrid car on the website. There are only a few other hybrid competitors that Prius shoppers consider. These cars include the Honda Insight, Honda Civic Hybrid and the Chevrolet Volt.
The Honda Insight has 1.3-liter four cylinder hybrid engine with 98 horsepower that gets a combined 42 MPG. While the Insight is a cheaper alternative to the Prius, it lacks the driving dynamics and fuel efficiency of its Toyota competitor. The Insight was the most popular Honda hybrid because of its affordability, but the Civic Hybrid is nearly as popular, if not more. It gets a combined 44 MPG which is more than the Insight and boasts a peppy 1.5-liter four cylinder hybrid with 90 horsepower that is reviewed better than the engine in the Insight.
Another Prius competitor is the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid electric that only uses a motorized engine when it runs out of electricity. The Chevrolet Volt gets a combined 94 miles per gallon equivalent or MPGe. On gasoline, the Volt gets a combined 37 MPG. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid is the most relevant competitor to the Chevrolet Volt.
There are a few different types of used Prius for sale on Mojo Motors, the regular Prius hatchback, the Prius v, Prius c and Prius Plug-In. See below for pictures of each. The Prius and Prius v both use the same 1.8-liter hybrid four cylinder engine with 134 horsepower. The compact Prius c is powered by a 1.5-liter hybrid four cylinder engine with 99 horsepower.
The Prius is the original Toyota hybrid. The midsize hatchback is about 10 inches shorter than the Camry and just a bit larger than the Corolla. The midsize hatchback gets about 50 MPG combined.
The Prius v station wagon is built on the same platform as the normal Prius, but the body is extended and boasts over 34 cubic feet of cargo space. It is almost the same size as the Honda Accord, but because it is a wagon, has significantly more cargo space. The Prius V has adjustable seating that allows the rear seats to slide forward and back making it one of the best hybrid family cars. The Prius V gets about 42 MPG combined.
The Prius c compact-hatchback is the most affordable used Prius for sale. It’s also the smallest which helps it get about 50 MPG combined.
The Prius Plug-In Hybrid looks almost identical to the normal Prius, except what is under the hood. The 1.8-liter gasoline four cylinder engine and 80 horsepower electric car power the Prius which help it achieve a combined 95 miles per gallon equivalent or MPGe. This is actually slightly better than the Chevrolet Volt.
